First World War DCM casualty gallantry group of four medals comprising of GRV Distinguished Conduct Medal, 1914-15 Star, 1914-18 British War Medal and 1914-19 Victory Medal. Named to W.O.II Albert Steel, 10th Battalion Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. Together with First World War Casualty Memorial plaque named to Albert Steel, and together with related ephemera, letters, New testament of the Bible.

Born 1896 Son of Mr. Joseph and Mrs. Caroline Steel, of East Ardsley, Wakefield, West Didsbury. Manchester. 1911 Census states that his occupation aged 15 as Pit Bottom Pony Driver. Albert enlisted into the 10th Battalion Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry on 5th October 1915 with the serial number of 18780

18780 A/CSM A. Steel (Wakefield) Awarded DCM for conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When most of his officers were casualties he assisted in consolidating the captured ground under a heavy barrage. Later, he went out on patrol and gained valuable information. His Gallantry was a fine example to all ranks - London Gazette 6th February 1918 page 1772

Albert Steel then transferred to A company 2nd Battalion Rifle Brigade(The Prince Consort’s Own) and changed serial numbers to 48212.

27th May 1918 – German Attack Started. Barrage opened at 1am, and battalion front was heavily gassed and trench mortared at 4am. The Enemy attacked, using tanks. The Battalion suffered very heavy casualties during the preliminary bombardment and attack. The remants retired to the 2nd Line and thence over the Aisne by Gernicourt and held that village untill forced to withdraw towards Guyencourt.

Casualties estimated at 27 officers and 680 other ranks. With remaining 60 other ranks and 7 officers on the 29th May. Albert Steel was one of the casualties sustained during the heavy bombardment and German Attack. Killed on the 27/ 28th May 1918 Albert was only 22 years old when he was killed. Buried and commemorated with honours at La Ville-Aux - Bois British Cemetery II.1.14
